Amazon Web Services has expanded its Amazon Veteran Apprenticeship Program to the Northern Virginia area, finding its base for training and apprenticeship in Herndon, Va. The decision was reached and carried out in cooperation with Congresswoman Barbara Comstock and Northern Virginia Community College.
The program consists of seven veterans representing several branches of the military who will receive training for certifications in cloud computing and other technical roles. The apprentices will undergo training at Northern Virginia Community College before beginning their paid apprenticeships in Amazon’s Herndon office.
This initiative’s expansion comes as a result of last year’s announcement by Amazon to hire and train 25,
000 veterans and military spouses. Amazon’s Veteran Apprenticeship Program was developed in partnership with the Department of Labor. According to a press release, the goal of the program is to “serve as just one mechanism to help achieve that goal, ultimately creating a seamless pipeline of talent to fill technical roles at Amazon and elsewhere.”
