American footballer Alex Jenkins reveals the huge sacrifices he’s made to achieve NFL dreamThe 24 year old from Odd Down spoke exclusively about signing for New Orleans Saints17:54, 27 MAY 2017Get Daily updates directly to your inbox+ SubscribeThank you for subscribing!Could not subscribe, try again laterInvalid EmailHe has sacrificed a lot in pursuit of his dream, but Bath American footballer Alex Jenkins admits it was all worth it as he prepares to start the first chapter of his NFL career.The 24 year old, who grew up and resides in Odd Down, signed with NFL franchise New Orleans Saints this week as an additional overseas player in their practice squad for 2017.Speaking exclusively to the Chronicle, Jenkins revealed there were times when he thought about giving up after taking the risk of moving to the States on a scholarship.However, having finally been given his shot at the big time, the former St Gregory’s School pupil said he is now focused on making the most of his opportunity.”It’s more than a dream come true,” he explained. “Ever since I was a kid I’ve wanted to be a professional athlete that was the goal.Bath American footballer Alex Jenkins signs for NFL side New Orleans Saints for 2017 season”And ever since I started this game it was just the ultimate goal to play in the NFL.”Jenkins started his American football journey at Bristol Aztecs and the American Football Academy, before moving to Texas in 2013 to join the University of the Incarnate Word on a full scholarship.(Image: Paul Gillis)The 6ft 5ins defensive end rose to prominence as a three year starter in his position in San Antonio, but the journey to NFL stardom has not been all plain sailing for Jenkins.”I lost a lot of time with my family and maybe lost some relationships, friendships,” he said. “I lost a family member when I was out there, so it was a huge sacrifice.”A lot of people can’t do it, a lot of people would have given up and there was points where I felt the pull of wanting to give up but it never fully took me in.”It was just something I had to fight and it was hard being a college football player, it’s hard especially being a foreign college football player.”But this is a new chapter so it’s going to be something which I believe emotionally is going to be easier, but physically it’s going to be harder.”Who is Bath American footballer Alex Jenkins? Everything you need to know about NFL Draft hopefulHaving attracted interest from several franchises leading up to the NFL Draft earlier this month, Jenkins had hoped he may have been a pick in the seventh round.It wasn’t to be this time around, but after intense negotiations with agents and several teams he was confirmed as a Saints player as part of a new International Player Pathway programme .The programme saw each team from the NFC South division given an exemption for an 11th practice squad member ineligible to be activated during the season.Jenkins now considers his route to the NFL a blessing in disguise and said his selection is validation for all the hard work he has put in since he first picked up the sport in 2012.
