Alexander McNair was elected the first governor of Missouri on Aug. 28, 1820. senators, David Barton, who blamed McNair for not stopping a duel that killed his brother.
The first General Assembly of Missouri began its first session at the Missouri Hotel in St. Louis on Sept. 18, 1820.
Read the MissouriOn Dec. 31, 1821 the bill designating Howard’s Bluff, on the south bank of the Missouri River at the mouth of Wier’s Creek, was signed. Gov. McNair signed another bill Jan. 11, 1822 that established the permanent seat of state government to be named the City of Jefferson.
As state officials waited for Jefferson City to be ready for the Legislature, the temporary seat of state government was moved from St. Louis to St. Charles in 1821. Jefferson City would not be ready to host the government until 1826.
Missouri’s first state senator, James G. Hunter, was elected in August 1821. Hunter was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and a farmer and dramshop owner in Cole County. John Inglish was elected representative in the same election.
The Missouri state seal was created from a bill adopted by the state legislature Jan. 11, 1821.
The Rising Sun Hotel opened on Madison Street in November 1825 in anticipation of the coming legislators. It was the first brick building built in Jefferson City and stood until the 1960s.
The first strike by female workers occurs in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on May 24, 1824.
