A commemorative ceremony was held this afternoon in honour of the 75th anniversary of two separate German U boat attacks on ore carriers operating out of the Bell Island mine.
On September 5th 1942, the SS Saganaga and SS Lord Strathcona were targeted while at anchor off Lance Cove, killing 29 men. 27 were torpedoed taking the lives of 40 men.

90 year old Bell Island resident, Rita McGrath was 15 years old at the time of the attacks. She says it a relief to see the event honoured with a formal commemoration ceremony.
McGrath says she never thought she would live to see the day the attacks would be recognized. She says she is very happy to see it because she can still remember all the who lost their lives as a result.
