STAUNTON Democrat Michele Edwards will challenge Del. Dickie Bell, R Staunton, for his District 20 seat in the House of Delegates, she announced in front of the Augusta County Courthouse Thursday.
Edwards, of Staunton, saidinrunning she would work to ensurefull funding for public education, findsolutions to provide healthcare access to all Virginians, defendproperty rights and the environment,
supportlocal business and economic growth, protectthe rights of all people regardless of background and workacross the aisle in the House of Delegates, according to a press release.
She noted the recent uptick in political activity in the community with the rise of grassroots organizations like Local and Vocal, the SAW Action Movement and Indivisible Staunton becauseof people’s”anger and disappointment over the current political situation” and said she sees those all as “positive actions that show what concerned and caring people you are.”

She said she’s concerned about the challenges the community is facing at the moment, from issues like opioid and other drug abuse, mental health problemsand high poverty levels, referencing that 16.7 percent of Stauntonians live below the poverty level and the difficultythat poses to families. She said shenow works for an organizationthat “supports small businesses in areas of high unemployment here in the US and in 26 other countries around the world,
” according to the press release.
“We need strong local businesses to supply the material and service needs of our community, but we also need them to supply meaningful jobs!” she said.”In order for them to offer comfortable salaries and affordable benefits to employees, we need to support them to ensure their success. What would Staunton be without the amazing businesses that we can patronize just by walking downtown?”
Edwards said she’s hoping to get input from the community, regardless of political affiliation, on what local issues are important to them, to help her write her platform.

and the drive, but I need your expertise!” Edwards said.”You know, someone said to me recently that it would be a cold day in hell before an incumbent in Virginia’s 20th district would be beaten, so I chose a cold day in Staunton, Virginia, to announce my plans to do just that!”
Bell was confirmed as the Republican nominee for the District 20 seat Wednesday and Will Hammer announced his plans to run as Libertarian candidatelast Friday. The election will be heldNov. 7.
