blank hockey jerseys wholesale Artists and scholars celebrate a feminist space at Leeds School of Fine Art

A two day symposium taking place this week at the University of Leeds will bring together significant scholars and artists who have been involved in the feminist project at the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies over the past forty years.

A Feminist Space at Leeds: Looking Back to Think Forward aims to provide a space for critical reflections and responses in the context of this feminist project that has been sustained through the work of (and inspired by) prominent feminist art historian and cultural theorist Professor Griselda Pollock in her 40 years at the University of Leeds.

The symposium will take the form of short presentations and discussions looking back towards a genealogy of a specific kind of contribution to feminism via art, art history and cultural studies. It will also look forward to ask what is urgent to scholars currently working at the intersection of critical engagements in art, feminism and education.

As part of the event, artist and curator Lubaina Himid, winner of this year’s Turner Prize, will be in conversation with alumna Ella Spencer Mills about the crucial relationship between feminism, art and education.

Other contributions include artist/alumna Sutapa Biswas in conversation with PhD student Gill Park and a performance lecture by Adrian Rifkin (Professor of Art Writing in the Department of Art at Goldsmiths). Mary Kelly (Professor of Art and Critical Theory at the University of California, Los Angeles) will take part in a discussion with Griselda Pollock via Skype.

Elspeth Mitchell, one of seven PhD students organising the symposium, said:

are delighted to welcome Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid whose artworks and curatorial projects have been of great inspiration and support for curators, artists and art historians in Leeds.

highlight for me will be the conversation between Mary Kelly and Griselda Pollock. We are excited to hear them explore crucial themes of memory and transmission, feminist pedagogy and the issue of sustaining a feminist project in radically changing political and historical conditions. This event aims to think about the future of this kind of work in the School. The exhibition features the work of Sutapa Biswas, Griselda Pollock, Jo Spence, Maud Sulter and Marie Yates. This exhibition addresses the critical and artistic innovations that have been made possible through the sustained presence of a feminist space in Leeds.

A Feminist Space at Leeds: Looking Back to Think Forward takes place on 16 17 December 2017 at the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds. Full details can be found here.

The symposium is supported by the Cultural Institute, White Rose College of the Arts and Humanites (WRoCAH), the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures, Vice Chancellor Sir Alan Langlands and the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies.

By Cindy Frazier March 4, 2010

The concrete is crumbling a bit and the rebar is rusting around the edges, but the Hangover House is still sitting pretty in its perch high atop a hill off of Ceanothus Drive, where it has stood since 1937. The man who built it only enjoyed its spectacular views and ocean breezes for two years before he was lost at sea at age 39 while pursuing his profession and passion as an journalist. Today, after some 70 years in the hands of another family, the house that Richard Halliburton built still has the classic modern lines and feel of 1930s architecture inside and out. The City Council and folks in the audience of a special meeting Wednesday morning were split on how alterations should be handled on the 75 year old home once owned by Richard Halliburton, also known as Hangover House. The council voted 3 2 for the staff recommendation to remove a stop work order on the interior construction of the home when more exact plans are submitted, which Community Development Director John Montgomery said should be a simple task.

I look forward to going on the Laguna Coastline SightSeaing Cruise, and I enjoyed the ?From Canyon To Cove? column dedicated to it (?Glimpses of Laguna?s hidden history,? Feb. 19). I would like to share some information about the Halliburton House. The contemporary concrete house has no association with Halliburton, one of the world?s largest oil field service companies and was not built by the founder, Erle Halliburton. One would hope that both this newspaper and former Vice President Dick Cheney would want to correct any mistruths that had been published.

The City Council agreed Tuesday to permit the demolition of a derelict cottage, overturning a Design Review Board denial and outraging some South Laguna residents. The council split 3 2, clearing the way for the cottage demolition at 31762 Coast Highway. South Coast Water District officials claimed the demolition was essential as part of its planned five year, $50 million project to stabilize a sewer tunnel and pipeline replacement. Other stories have had some interesting developments that we just haven’t been able to get in the paper. As the year closes, it’s a good time to “catch you up” on some of these stories. Aviation historian Barbara H. Schultz gave folks a peek into the lives of pilots Moyes Stephens and Florence “Pancho” Barnes and Richard Halliburton , who was only included because he was Stephens’ passenger. Barnes was one of the foremost pilots in the so called Golden Age of Aviation.

By Cindy Frazier December 15, 2011

A new owner plans to preserve the iconic “Hangover House” in South Laguna Beach, built by adventurer Richard Halliburton in the 1930s. Realty agent Fred James of Laguna Beach brokered the sale of the property, which he owned, having obtained it out of bankruptcy, along with 13 other properties, from the late Zolita Scott’s estate. A Laguna local bought the 2,2000 square foot house for $2.4 million, about half the original asking price, and an adjacent 8,000 square foot lot for $800,000, James said.

Superior Court Judge Gregory Munoz on Monday ruled against plaintiffs Eileen Garcia and George Riviere in their lawsuit to stop city funding of the facility on Laguna Canyon Road. The property owners object to a reduction in the allowable grade steepness for new streets, and they accuse some city officials elected and appointed of conflicts of interest in supporting the grade reduction.

It seems like every Spring I plant interesting sounding plants and then at the end of the summer I wonder what to do with them. After all there’s only so much herb infused vinegar one family can possibly consume in a year.

So back in the day, when I was making soap and stuff, I also made Artist’s Hand Salve from the overabundance of comfrey that was growing wild at our home in Woodstock, NY, Mezza Luna Farm. Many culinary herbs and garden flowers have natural healing properties. Rosemary, lemon balm and rose petals are some of my favorites.

Put the dried herbs in a cooking pot and cover with oil. Use a 1:1 ratio. If you have a crock pot that will work just great but anything non reactive will work. As far as the type of oil, olive oil will be fabulous but it’s also fun to experiment with other types. Most health food store have organic coconut oil, almond oil, hemp oil, etc.

Heat the oil mixture for at least 3 hours. Like sun tea you can also put your mixture in a large jar and put it in the sun for the afternoon.

When the infused oil has cooled strain it through cheesecloth. Put the mixture back into your cooking pot.

Add beeswax to the infused oil and heat slowly until the wax has melted. Use 1 part wax to 4 parts oil more or less depending on how solid you want it to be. And a couple of vitamin E capsules would be a nice addition. NOTE: If you want it to be more like a or a you can pour it into a mold and then wrap it in parchement something like a muffin tin works well.

That’s it! Pour your salve into little pots or and let them cool. Wow!

I have about a zillion recipes from my Mezza Luna Farm days I’ll post more as I go. And I’ll try to be a little more exact on the measurements on most of them but for this one it’s one of those things that you can adjust so the quanities are just a general guideline.

“We also operate within an Environment Agency permit which has strict rules and regular assessments.

Mr Dawson said the firm had been running HGV operations from a site on Brick Street for the last six to eight months, and the change of use application was the next step in bringing its asbestos operations to the site.
