It a different side to the blues. I take a lot of time and effort to write songs so they don sound like they were just thrown together. In order to stand out, you have to write great songs. that regard, Rawls readily agrees that “genuine soul music” is in short supply these days, its classic sound having been displaced by rap, hip hop, and other styles informed by the urban experience.

these days don know anything about genuine soul music, Rawls says in explaining why those classic sounds seem so scarce these days. don hear it on the radio, so they don know. When I was coming up, you could hear Joe Tex and Sam and Dave and the Temptations, and we listened to that music all the time. But nowadays, these kids don hear that, so they have no idea what it all about. remembers playing clarinet and saxophone in the marching band growing up in Mississippi: “When I was in eighth grade, this promoter came to my school because he was trying to put together a dance band in Jackson, and so he asked me if I would play sax. I agreed, and after that, when all the artists came through area, they would use us as their band, and we play with them from Mobile to New Orleans, anywhere within a 200 mile radius. I got to meet all these great stars when I was only 16, 17 years old. A handful of well chosen covers the Rollings Stones of Burden, Sam Cooke oft covered classic a Party, and Jackie Wilson familiar standard Love Keeps Lifting Me (Higher and Higher) attest to a pedigree Rawls gained early on.

While he laments the fact that younger people lack some important musical exposure, he also has some choice comments about certain older musicians who’ve exploited the blues and soul sounds as a final career move.

TUSCALOOSA Collin Sexton’s first field goal attempt clanked off the top of the rim 54 seconds into his collegiate debut. He didn’t many after that.

Bouncing around during pregame warmups, Alabama’s hyped freshman scored a game high 22 points on 7 of 10 shooting with a team high 5 assists to help spark the youthful Crimson Tide to a 86 64 win over Lipscomb in Tuesday night’s home opener inside a half full Coleman Coliseum.

“Whatever (he did), that’s what we need,” Alabama head coach Avery Johnson said of Sexton. “I need a little animation, and emotion, pride, and whatever they call it swagger I call it confidence, not arrogance.

“I’m sure he probably was (excited). If he was animated and emotional and excited about the game, that’s the guy we recruited.”

Sexton wasn’t alone Tuesday night, as fellow freshman guard John Petty added 14 points on 6 of 11 shooting, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in a team high 33 minutes, while sophomore guard Dazon Ingram had 13 points,

7 rebounds and 5 assists. Junior center Donta Hall added 10 points while junior guard Avery Johnson Jr. had 9 points.

“It’s finally good to be able to pick up our team chemistry and put all the pieces together before the little (eligibility) situation popped up,” Petty said of having Sexton back out on the floor. “It was great just getting back in rhythm with each other.”

Sexton made his collegiate debut Tuesday night after sitting out last Friday’s season opener against Memphis while serving a one game NCAA mandated suspension after his eligibility was brought into question prior to the season.

“I think he’s been a champ in terms of his courage and character and mainly his commitment to the program,” Johnson said. “You learn a lot about people in adversity. You learn so much about where you stand in a relationship with somebody when there is adversity.”

Alabama (2 0) posted its second straight 80 plus point performance despite a poor 12 of 32 showing from the free throw line and getting outrebounded by Lipscomb 47 40, including 16 5 on the offensive end.

“I saw that we need to be a little more physical without fouling (on the inside),” Johnson said. “We reacted too much to their post moves, instead of being the aggressor.”

The Bison (2 1) led 15 14 at the 13:37 mark of the first half, but the Tide rolled out a 16 7 run thanks to seven straight points from Johnson and five points from Sexton, including a pair of free throws to lead 30 22.

Lipscomb pulled within 41 40 over the first 2 minutes of the second half, but Sexton scored 4 straight to spark a 19 10 run for Alabama’s first double digit lead 60 50.

Alabama was playing without the help of sophomore wing Braxton Key, last season’s leading scorer, and senior wings Armond Davis and Riley Norris, all of whom are out with injuries.
